MANYATTA SLUM YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECT (MASYEP) Manyatta is a slum settlement in Kisumu City; Western Kenya. It has a big population of youths, most of whom are jobless; leading to high levels of idleness hence crime. Moreover, nearly 40% of the youths have attained college certification but cannot secure any formal employment. MASYEP offers training on alternative employment with a major focus on SELF EMPLOYMENT.It aims to nurture JOB CREATORS rather than JOB SEEKERS.MASYEP comprises of the following sub- projects: a. Capacity Building b. Youth development center (YDC) c. Community resource center/Dialogue center d. Health Scheme
Mentorship programs or network
MASYEP stands for Manyatta Slums Youth Empowerment Project. Manyatta is a very big slum area in Kisumu County, Kenya.Due to its slum setting, rampant poverty situations, lack of employment and adequate resources, Manyatta area is struggling with idle youths, general poverty and inadequate resources. Moreover, the rapid population growth in the area leaves the community helpless and devoid of ideas and skills for income generation. The disadvantaged slum folks are often severely affected due to lack of knowledge to generate wealth by creating new businesses and having good health care. The objective of MASYEP is to minimize the impact of vulnerability of slum population, infrastructure, lifeline and health facilities. To accomplish this, the project focuses on establishment of community based systems to improve the capacity and skills of the community to manage the risk and apply sound financial and mitigation skills. Some of the strategies lined up include research and reporting, capacity building, financial support and business incubation.The project is implemented with direct supervision of the local youth groups, local women groups, Government of Kenya, individual volunteers and other partner bodies.

This targets youths who are un-employed or have dropped out of school. The un-employed but educated youths are trained on the basic concepts of creating employment rather than looking for employment. The un-educated youths are trained on important employability skills with a clear focus on the hospitality industry, motor mechanics and customer care in supermarkets and shopping malls. Both groups are also trained on Public health and sanitation. Health education and advocacy is an important role here. Moreover, there is a plan for provision of health insurance cover to the targeted clusters at subsidized rates that are very friendly to the community.
Youth Development Center
Under this project, business based care to youths is offered. Selected youths are allowed to present business ideas and proposals which are then evaluated and scored by a panel. The best ten proposals are funded and operated jointly with an aim to foster their growth- business incubation.
Community Dialogue Center/resource
Information from local chief/assistant chief can be relayed to the community at this venue.It is like a public baraza.This would inturn bring people together to discuss development based issues.Provision of newspapers, Tv’s , journals, books,DVD players is underway to ensure that it becomes a small modern day library.
Youth Vocational Center
This targets youth out of school .The center provides life skills to youths who drop out of school. Skills like carpentry, dressmaking, masonry and welding; just to mention but a few; are instilled into the youths. Products from the venture will be sold at subsidized prices to generate income for the entire project.
