OVERVIEW

Description

While Afghanistan faces many economic challenges, unemployment of its youth being at the top, the only way forward for creating a self-reliant economy is thought creation of a successful and viable private sector. The country needs an eco-system that can harness growth of private enterprises and industries. Since 2001 the country has dramatically improved required levels of infrastructure that were lost during the wars. Coupled with technological advances, the country has experienced the progress associated with improved private sector development as well as the rise of small-scale industries. Afghan entrepreneurs, though among most passionate and innovative in the region, lack necessary modern business skills and know-how to compete and grow in a growingly diverse and challenging environment of a frontier economy.

However, at this junction of time what is required in Afghanistan is a systematic, comprehensive and long-term approach toward private sector development; aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation; capitalizing on key sectors identified by the Afghan government with growth and investment potential; as well as strengthening entrepreneurial skills to create conducive platforms for growth, diversification, commercialization and expansion of social ventures.

Through experience and interaction with Afghan businessmen/women we have learned that among other factors, lack of self-confidence, coupled with professional business and management support is one of the major causes of failures of social ventures in Afghanistan. Afghan entrepreneurs, though among most passionate and innovative in the region, lack necessary modern business skills and know-how to compete and grow in a growingly diverse and challenging environment of a post-conflict emerging market.

Drawing from the experiences of countries that have successfully managed and implemented business support initiatives - such as in the US, South Africa, Uganda, India, Myanmar, South Korea, Japan and China - our goal is to design and implement a comprehensive program that can understand the needs and challenges of start-ups and social ventures, and can offer effective practical and effective ways to accelerate social venture growth and sustainable development.

SHETAB Strategies

To build the next generation of purpose driven and mindful Afghan entrepreneurs by:

➢ Providing Afghan entrepreneurs with hands-on and experiential learning opportunities to build confidence and the necessary capabilities for launching, designing, and leading (social) enterprises;
➢ Optimizing the existing entrepreneurship resources inside Afghanistan to build a more vibrant and inclusive ecosystem, and community of spurring entrepreneurs who are innovative, productive and competitive; and
➢ Act as a connecting Hub between Afghan entrepreneurs and policy makers via targeted research and studies that could influence policy makers and promote informed and inclusive decision making promoting the ecosystem.
➢ To continuously monitor, learn and improve our program.
