OVERVIEW

Description

Pelagius’ mission is to make it easier for women to have continuous access to safe and effective oral contraceptives in the USA and worldwide by offering a non-prescription birth control pill. Latent demand for a non-prescription contraceptive pill has been validated by independent research (UCSF and Emory). Pelagius conducted an extensive global search for a prescription birth control pill available for purchase and we managed to find one – we now own an approved high-quality Rx oral contraceptive product with a long safety history and fitting attributes for the first-in-class OTC switch.

The idea of making birth control available over-the-counter (OTC) has been around for a long time and is well-supported by the medical establishment. Oral contraceptives are safer than many over-the-counter medications. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and other leading medical associations have officially recommended over-the-counter access as a way to improve usage and reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. A shocking 50% of pregnancies are accidental in the US, and there are similar statistics in many other countries. Fewer unplanned pregnancies will result in fewer abortions. “If we want to reduce poverty, one of the simplest, fastest and cheapest things we could do would be to make sure that as few people as possible become parents before they actually want to,” said Isabel Sawhill, an economist at the Brookings Institution. She argues in her 2014 book, “Generation Unbound: Drifting Into Sex and Parenthood Without Marriage,” that single parenthood is a principal driver of gender inequality and access to birth control a powerful tool to prevent it. This statement is supported by the Copenhagen Consensus Center, which has conducted ground-breaking research on how to re-shape government spending globally, by calculating the "benefit per $ spent" for various goals. They concluded that access to contraception is one of the most effective ways to achieve global improvement goals.

All women of reproductive age.
In the US alone, we estimate the total eligible market to be ~30.5 million women, excluding infertile, pregnant or trying to get pregnant, sterilized (male or female), and outside reproductive ages. The 30.5 million US market is made up of current pill users (~10.5 million), other reversible method users (~13.8 million), and not using any method (~6.2 million).

In many parts of the world, a woman can walk into a drugstore and buy a pack of birth control pills over-the-counter–but not in the US and many other countries. The Pill has been used safely for over half a century by more than 300 million women. It’s safer than many OTC medications. There is no reason it should remain restricted. We have a bold plan to revolutionize the way The Pill is sold and make it available over-the-counter.

The history of The Pill has been largely a story of women pushing for reproductive freedom and society resisting change. The invention of The Pill is considered one of the most important developments in human history, allowing people to control the all-important decision of whether and when to have a child.

Ease of availability will enhance compliance and reduce unintended pregnancies, just because it will be more accessible. Pelagius’ disruptive innovation is the delivery option.
