Description

Our society currently relies on finite resources of fossil fuel, rock phosphate fertilizer and abundant clean water. PIARCS provides revolutionary solutions to fully address this shortcoming by developing IP in the independent areas of algal biofuel production (PCT application) and biological phosphorus removal from wastewater (Provisional patent). As the culmination of a 20-year journey pursuing sustainability avenues through scientific research, Dr. Holland founded PIARCS as a as a Public Benefit Corporation to deploy her IP’s tremendous potential. As a PBC, PIARCS offers the unique opportunity to create a virtuous sustainability cycle by channeling significant revenues toward serving its mission. PIARCS primarily conducts R&D and generates revenue through licensing its IP. PIARCS considers the PBC framework as a key structure to fulfill the CleanTech sector’s sustainability potential, and is therefore committed to ensuring outstanding financial returns for its investors as a means to generally attract investment in PBC’s.

PIARCS’ scalable expansion strategy, which entails low-cost licensing to end users only, by-passes the bottlenecks associated with market penetration by a single integrated entity. In addition, PIARCS’ near term priority will be to continuously improve its wastewater and biofuel proprietary technologies for licensees at no additional cost, while ensuring reward for early-adopters. As a means to couple investors’ financial returns to long term growth, PIARCS has built-in a dividend structure in its Certificate of Incorporation. PIARCS’ expansion strategy and value creation are consistent with the PBC framework, in which long term shareholder value and stakeholder benefits converge.

Target Market

Based on its highly scalable expansion strategy, PIARCS’ target market comprises:
- 100% of the companies transitioning to large-scale algal biomass/biofuel production, which comprise farmers, current fossil energy providers… PIARCS’ low-cost $0.05/gal licensing revenue would generate $17bn/year from the US transportation fuel market alone.
- 100% of the wastewater cleanup facilities, due to stringent EPA phosphorus standards coming into effect nationwide. PIARCS’ low-cost $3/person licensing revenue would generate $1bn/year from the US Wastewater treatment facilities alone.
- Fertilizer suppliers, since PIARCS’ technology would provide an easily processed and renewable phosphorus feedstock in the context of diminishing rock phosphate reserves.

How We Create Impact

In the near term, PIARCS’ technologies provide the final keystones enabling a sustainable society. Indeed, scalable high yield algal biomass and biofuel provide a renewable feedstock to produce bio-based plastics and chemicals. Coupling PIARCS’ algal biofuel and phosphorus removal technologies allows to produce a nutrient-free effluent from wastewater, which is critical to curb and revert ecosystems eutrophication.

In the medium-to-far term, PIARCS will channel licensing revenues to build public consensus around sustainable development technologies by promoting public deliberation, education, and ecosystem restoration projects.

Importantly, PIARCS considers the Public Benefit Corporation framework as a key structure to fulfill the CleanTech sector’s sustainability potential, and is therefore committed to ensuring outstanding financial returns for its investors as a means to generally attract investment in PBC’s.
